Thanking everyone for such a great turn out at the ´The New Adventures of PP Arnold´ media launch!

It was truly a Beautiful Evening. Lovely Q&A chat with BBC 6 Music broadcaster Matt Everett and after a 30 minute set backed by Steve Cradock- Guitar, Andy Bennett-Guitar, Justin Dodsworth-Keys, Me´Sha Bryan and Angie Brown BV´s and The Calm String Quartet.

I was overjoyed with the result that Steve Cradock produced and conducted, it was truly a Beautiful Thing. So many dear special friends and special guests Paul Weller and Lynval Golding who also contributed to the labour of love that Steve Cradock and I created were there.

earMUSIC announced the release date of PP Arnold's new album ‘The New Adventures Of… P.P. Arnold’:

“I’ve been a fan of PP ever since hearing ‘The First Cut’, and then ‘Tin Soldier’. Her voice is still as great as it was when she was 18/19 years old! Steve Cradock has tried to keep something of the early Immediate Records sound on this new record, whilst still sounding fresh, and it is for me one of the finest in her collection” – Paul Weller

Five decades after she became a ’60s icon with the timeless pop hits ‘The First Cut Is The Deepest’ and ‘Angel Of The Morning’ on Rolling Stones manager Andrew Oldham’s ultra-hip Immediate label, soul singer P.P. Arnold is set to release a double-album of stunning new material featuring contributions from, among others, Paul Weller, Ocean Colour Scene’s Steve Cradock, The Specials and P.P’s songwriter son, Kodzo.

Titled ‘The New Adventures Of… P.P. Arnold’ and released via earMUSIC on August 9th , the album crowns an extraordinary career that has seen the singer back Ike & Tina Turner as one of The Ikettes, record with Mick Jagger, the Small Faces, Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton, Barry Gibb and Primal Scream, and provide her distinctive backing vocals for Billy Ocean, Peter Gabriel, the KLF, Paul Weller and, most recently, Roger Waters.

‘The New Adventures Of PP Arnold’ was recorded and produced by life-long P.P. enthusiast, OCS star and Paul Weller band guitarist Steve Cradock at his Kundalini Studio in Devon, and follows on – after a 51-year gap – from the singer’s two legendary solo albums on Immediate Records, ‘The First Lady Of Immediate’ (1967) and ‘Kafunta’ (1968), as well as a more recent compilation of previously unreleased material from the late ’60s and ’70s, ‘The Turning Tide’ (2017).

“I’ve got this huge catalogue of records I’ve sung on, but I have only released two albums - and they’ve stood the test of time,” P.P. explains. “It’s been about quality not quantity! I’ve had to deal with a lot of tragedy. You kind of think people at record companies have forgotten about you, but Steve and [his wife] Sally have really made this happen. Steve’s production is slamming.”

The beginnings of the album - spanning classic orchestral soul (‘Baby Blue’, ‘Finally Found My Way Back Home’), sunshine pop (‘The Magic Hour’), house music (‘Hold On To Your Dreams’), a spine-chilling gospel elegy inspired by her daughter’s death (‘I’ll Always Remember You’), two Paul Weller originals (‘When I Was Part Of Your Picture’, ‘Shoot The Dove’) and an epic, edgy 10-minute reading of Bob Dylan’s poem ‘The Last Thoughts On Woody Guthrie’ – can be traced back 25 years to 1994.

Worldwide tours with Roger Waters put the project on the backburner, but when Cradock rediscovered the tapes during a house move four years ago, both parties were excited about the prospect of finally completing an album.

“It’s great that I’m coming back with this record,” says P.P. “Even now, I’m still finding my way, because the industry changes every decade, and you’re sometimes out of the loop. For me it’s all about faith, meditating, love, praying… try to be ready and don’t give up the fight. That’s the message.”

The correct answer is C - 2002

Australian Tour November - December 2018
Tonight and tomorrow are the last two shows of PP Arnold's Australian Tour.

Wondering how it feels to be at PP Arnold show?

"Two more of the impressive ‘lost’ Barry Gibb songs closed the main set, before an encore that delivered, musically, a fiery version of Tin Soldier. Tim Rogers’ mike seemed to switch off as he was trying to emulate Steve Marriott’s vocal intensity just as the first chorus kicked in, but the crowd, now all happily out of their seats, did not seem to notice as they responded to this classic song by singing it word for word themselves.

Closing the show with a new song, I Believe, was a brave choice. It will be one of the songs we will get to hear on Arnold’s next album release, and, on the strength of this particular performance, we should all be putting our pre-orders in now.

By show’s end the audience’s affection for this talented singer was palpable, it was clearly obvious that her humble demeanour had won us all over."

PP Arnold is about to release her new album "New Adventures".

On her Australian tour she will be including in the set 2 songs from the new album. Both songs have an interesting story.

The Story of 'I Believe':

'I Believe' is a song that I wrote with my son, Kodzo (Kojo) Samuel, that Kodzo also produced when he was 16 years old. We recorded the original digital version on my 16 track home studio as a dance track along with another song that's also on the 'New Adventures' album called, 'Hold On To Your Dreams'. Both tracks have a very spiritual, faith element about them. Unfortunately, the lyrics were not of importance to the industry at the time. Times have changed and I feel that the hope that we all have for the future is relevant in both of these songs. I loved the production that Kodzo put on the songs and didn't want him to be affected by the struggle that I was going through as a result of the ageism politics that I was experiencing at the time. Kodzo moved on and found his niche in the industry and is the musical director for many young artists of today. Jess Glynne, Rita Ora, Rudimental, Plan B, Jessie J and Tynchy Stryder are just a few of the artists that he works with.

I played both tracks to Steve Cradock when we were choosing songs for the 'New Adventures' album and Steve liked them both and has produced them with 'live' instruments and breathed new life into the songs that like so much of my work was overlooked in the past, but that I never stopped believing in!

At 72, Arnold is preparing to tour Australia for the second time this year, following shows in May. Her backing band comprises three-quarters of You Am I, plus RockWiz keyboard guy James Black and the Wolfgram Sisters on backing vocals.

"The kind of tours we're doing, they'd be punishing for a 20-year old. We're talking about small gigs, flying to Auckland on three hours' sleep, 6am flights back to Sydney ... she's walking around on five-inch heels through these shitty backstage areas full of death traps … she just has this incredibly positive attitude about life that I find really inspiring."

After decades with Mondo Rock, the Black Sorrows, Men At Work and countless other bands, Black says Arnold's pre-show ritual – in which she invokes the help of God – is a first for him.

"Well, I'm trying to sound great, to keep my instrument together and be strong," Arnold says. "So I always say a prayer and ask God to let his light shine through and all around me and touch the hearts of everybody. I like to share that with the musicians I work with so that we have that spiritual bond together.

On her Australian tour PP Arnold will be including in her set a tribute to Aretha Franklin.

"When I was just 9 years old, I heard the voice of an angel on the radio. It was a young voice and she was singing a song called ‘Never Grow Old’. This was the first time that I heard Aretha Franklin sing. Like everyone else who heard that voice, I was mesmerized and she touched me deep in my young soul. She became my Soul inspiration and became the voice that influenced me in my expression every time I sang at Church on Sunday mornings. She had that same fire like Mahalia Jackson, but with a younger, sweeter innocence and I loved her from that day on.

I too was a young girl born into a strict Baptist household so when I became pregnant at 15, I felt even closer to Aretha who also had the same experience at an even younger age. I loved everything that Aretha sang, Gospel, Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, and Soul. When she first sang Nessun Dorma at the 1998 Grammy’s and again during her illness at the Festival of Families in 2015, She left us in no doubt of her greatness!!! Aretha, was like Ray Charles and Sam Cooke, no matter what they sang, there was always that Gospel root that could not be mistaken.

Although I never got the opportunity to meet Aretha properly, I once caught a glimpse of her leaving a hotel in dark glasses hiding her pain, Tina was checking in wearing dark glasses hiding her pain. I had experienced their pain as a young woman caught up in an abusive teen marriage that thanks to Tina, I had been able to leave behind me. Still, I felt their pain deeply and it brought me closer to the both of them even though I was no longer living that particular pain I was still traumatized by those events.

As her fame grew and grew she expressed that pain through the songs that she sang and as she searched for someone to love and Respect her, she touched us all with an even deeper love and my love and respect for her grew more and more as I searched for someone to love and respect me.

I humbly pay ‘RESPECT’ to the ‘Queen Of Soul’, Aretha Franklin. What a Woman! What a Talent! What a Life and What a Blessing she is to us all!!! Her Faith, Hope, Kindness, Unselfish Generosity, Truth, Honesty, Strength, Endurance, Passion, Sensuality and down to Earth for real Sassy, fun loving personality along with the Great Musical Legacy that she left us, guarantees that she will live on in our hearts and minds forever and ever and she will never grow old. She was truly one of a kind and will never be duplicated!!! May she Rest In Eternal Peace."

Here is a life review of this show by a popular Australian music magazine:

"It was the performance of The Small Faces 'Tin Soldier' with Tim Rogers letting it rip and P.P. Arnold projecting her voice into the stratosphere that was my concert highlight. See above for a video of that performance. There is something about this particular song. Just the opening chords sends a chill down my spine."

(At one point that included a walk through a park with Mick Jagger, laden with innuendo; and a sharp sting of black humour as she recalled Ike Turner giving her a hard time - “Not that hard!”)

It was as if her good friends the Bee Gees, the Small Faces, Cat Stevens, Eric Clapton and Jagger were all there in the room with us. But she had Australian music royalty backing her up instead, in You Am I (sans Davey Lane), the sumptuous Talei Wolfgramm on vocal harmonies and James Black (RockWiz, Men at Work, The Black Sorrows) on keys.

Arnold commanded the stage in a blazing red sequinned dress to Wolfgramm’s black velvet and diamantes; Rogers sported a fawn paisley suit and a baby blue and gold “Timmybacker” guitar.

We were treated to familiar hits – each of which Arnold had an endearing back story for – and some lesser known tracks from her two 1960s solo records.

...The long cold fingers of winter were tapping the backs of people’s shoulders last night as eager fans arrived early to wait, huddled against eachother in front of the doors of the Powerstation. Once inside however and the atmosphere was one of warmth, subtle changes such as small tables and chairs and a soft black cloth cloaking the usual cold steel of the stage barrier lifting the venue into more of a cocktail bar persona for this rather special night. Ms P.P. Arnold, making her first ever visit to New Zealand was somewhere in the building and while she could not be seen her presence could be felt emanating through the very walls themselves.

Forget about the Royal Wedding – Auckland had a queen of their very own in the house tonight.

Supported by Tim Rogers, Rusty Hopkinson and Andy Kent of the Australian band You Am I and featuring the keyboard talents of Mr James Black there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that tonight’s performance by P.P. Arnold would be a life changing experience. Dressed in a very dapper paisley suit Tim Rogers stepped up to the microphone and announced the arrival of the regal Ms P.P. Arnold with the banter of a Las Vegas showman, the fans roaring in delight. As the 71 year old Ms Arnold stepped out from behind the curtain the roar intensified, a few sharp intakes of breath heard from those in the front rows as they gazed upon her magnificence, Arnold sparkling in her electric blue sequinned dress. With a smile that could stop traffic, Ms Arnold stepped forward and thanked the Auckland crowd announcing that she would be kicking the show off with the first song that she ever sang as part of The Ikettes ‘What You Gonna Do’ taking the audience and the very venue itself by the shoulders and shaking them down.

...

I’m in love with PP Arnold! It’s literally impossible not to be.

She’s an irrefutable embodiment of the restorative and redemptive power of singing. No, she’s not a household name. But that’s because so many of the unsung heroes of music are those (often invisible) gigging and session musicians who hold it all together behind the scenes or out of the spotlight, so that manufactured and marketed ‘stars’ sound as great as they do.

Particularly when it comes to backing vocalists (aka BVs, the most noble of professions IMHO) you’re often hard-pressed even finding them properly cited on liner notes. There’s very often no credit where credit is well overdue!

How wonderful then, that we can enjoy a whole show of PP Arnold’s voice – front row centre, where it belongs.

...

For this whirlwind two-week Tour-ette, she’s accompanied by You Am I’s Tim Rogers (on vocals, gat and stupendously dapper attire), Russell ‘Rusty’ Hopkinson (drums) and Andy Kent (bass). James Black, leader of Melbourne’s RocKwiz Orkestra, from SBS’s popular Live TV musical quiz show, was musically directing on keys. Another of PP’s co-stars for the night was Melbourne-based Talei Wolfgramm (from the Wolfgramm Sisters) on backing vocals. What a treat!

It was an interesting fusion of the rock of You am I and the soul of PP… but strange to say, after only three rehearsals, it worked.

"When Arnold arrives in New Zealand later this month she'll come as an emblem of swinging '60s chic, having sung with everyone including the Ikettes, the Small Faces, Primal Scream and Roger Waters.

Short and elegant, her powerful, soulful voice has graced some of pop music's finest albums. But a career in music could so easily have passed her by; it was only that impromptu performance for Ike and Tina - after a friend desperately called her to help out - that rescued her from a life of domestic abuse and obscurity."

Great reunion

All Or Nothing Musical Great reunion with my 60s bestie Sandy Sargent, the wife of Ian McLagen of the Small Faces and being able to reminisce on our days together watching Carol Harrison’s amazing all or nothing Musical about the Small Faces.

I am so glad that we were able to catch the last week of the west end performances of the Musical, meet up with Carol Harrison who also wrote, directed, produced and played Kay Marriott - the mother of Steve Marriott. Its a pity that the extended west end run has be closed so soon.

As well as singing Angel of the Morning and Tin Soldier another Scene was added to the Musical starring Karis Anderson singing The first cut is the deepest and brilliantly playing young PP Arnold.

1965. A new phenomenon erupted out of London's East End. It was the essence of all that was cool. It was Mod.

All Or Nothing- The Mod Musical follows the rise and demise of Small Faces, the band who encapsulated all that was mod - a unique blend of taste and testosterone, clothes-obsessed and street-wise - but most of all, a dedication to rhythm 'n' blues.

This stunning new home-grown musical celebrates the unique mod sound including an arsenal of brilliant hits like Whatcha Gonna Do About It, All Or Nothing, Tin Soldier, Lazy Sunday, Here Comes the Nice and Itchycoo Park.

Having played to packed houses and standing ovations across the UK, All Or Nothing - The Mod Musical played a limited season at The Ambassadors Theatre from 28th March until 12th May 2018.

We caught up with the legendary soul singer PP ARNOLD ahead of her performance at Cornbury Festival....

PP Arnold can only be described as a legend, she started her career way back in 1964 when she joined the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, she left in 1966 and went on to work with some of the most famous names in the music industry including The Small Faces, Barry Gibb, Rod Stewart, David Bowie and Roger Waters to name just a few.

During the late 1980’s, she worked with some ground breaking dance acts including The Beatmasters, The KLF and even provided vocals for Altern-8.

She’s remained active on the music circuit and is due to release her latest album in the Autumn (more on that later).

We heard that she's going to be performing at this year’s Cornbury Festival so we arranged some time to have a chat, she was in her villa in Spain, I was in a gloomy office in London, we chatted for far too long about all sorts of things, read on to find out what....

I was looking over your career to date trying to find a real 'stand out moment' and ask you some questions about it but as I delved deeper, there are just so many, so I’d like to ask you, what has been the stand out moment of your career to date and why?

They’ve all been amazing for so many different reasons, I guess if I had to choose one, it would be the early days, I was so young and it was all so new, I knew NOTHING about the business and it was as if destiny had opened up the door for me to be involved in the music industry, I never even thought about singing professionally! It was a time of very fast success, it was also a huge learning curve for me, as well as the ups, there were also lots of downs but when you’re young, you’re learning, it was a tough time for me but amazing at the same time!

If you could go back to the mid 60’s knowing what you know now, what would you tell yourself?

To be a lot stronger and more confident in myself, I didn’t have a lot of confidence at the time as my life had already been quite turbulent and I was quite introverted, I think I could have had more confidence about who I was as a young black woman, integrating for the first time in a multi cultured society. I’m still not a very good hustler, but back then, I knew nothing about networking or playing people, I had that real innocence that you have when you’re young and you learn as you go through your teenage years but as I said, my teenage years were quite turbulent and I had 2 children at the time and the responsibility that goes with that, I wasn’t as free flowing as I guess I might have been without the children, but I did have to go with the flow.

I guess you could say the same these days but look at what women are going through in the industry right now, I think it’s really important that you be who you are rather than someone that the industry wants you to be, it’s a man’s world and that hasn’t changed in god knows how many years!

My career would never have happened in America, growing up in London as a young American black woman was a much easier ride from my point of view than growing up in America, I loved it as people just thought you were really cool because you’re from America! I spent a lot of time pretending I WAS cool without falling off that wave where, in fact, I was really shy and doing my best to appear as a cool character!

I really don’t know what people saw in me as I had so little confidence at the time, all the other 'Ikettes' were so much prettier and taller than me and I was just a shy, introverted young lady! Deep down, I am my true self, as soon as I knew who my inner self was, I then worked out how to portray myself to the world!

I can be myself far better than I can be someone else! What you see is what you get, it’s all about love!

You have worked with some amazing names in the music business, who made the biggest impact on you?

Destiny had me and Jimi Hendrix in the same place at the same time and he was a great influence, he knew exactly what he was doing and where he was going and he used to tell me to "go with the experience", wise words indeed!

You’ve performed with a whole host of acts covering many genres including rock, pop, blues, reggae and even acid house/hardcore later ion in the 90’s with the likes of The Beatmasters, KLF and Altern-8, do you see yourself as a musical chameleon that can change its colours to suit the act that you’re working with?

To me it’s all about the voice, my voice is an instrument, I like doing lots of different things, things I’ve never done before. People like my sound, that's what attracts the people to me, to be able to use that sound is incredible. At the time, I never really understood the power of the voice as I do now, it’s just using my voice as an instrument to suit whichever genre. It’s all about the melody, it’s all about the rhythm, the timing and I just love all that. There are thousands of songs that I’ve never sung before, be it jazz, gospel, blues, I love it all!

You’re clearly not the kind of person who likes to be 'pigeon-holed' then?

It’s an experimental thing, I’m only one aspect of the finished piece, it’s the journey that I like, working with great producers, great writers and great musicians who inspire me to find things inside me that I didn’t know I had! The idea of working with different genres and fitting my sound into what they do creates something new and different.

It's incredible how you sound the same but with different styles of music behind you, it transforms what you do....

Wait until you hear the new album that Steve Cradock has produced! He’s still doing his Ocean Colour Scene thing and he’s another person who works with a really varied bunch of people including Paul Weller, The Specials and me, I guess he’s also a real musical chameleon! The new album is called “The New Adventures of PP Arnold” and it has so many different flavours, we’ve got some beautiful MOD styled Northern Soul sound going on, we used a few indie writers and they bought a great sound to the table, Jake Fletcher from the Steve Cradock band has written an incredible song called "Daltrey Street", when I was first heard it I told Steve I couldn’t sing it as I’m just an old lady who knew nothing about Daltrey Street which was a street in the North of England, he told me I’d be fine and as soon as I listened to it, I realised that Daltrey Street could be a street anywhere and as soon as I could relate to that, I could relate to the lyrics and then I’m in!

We re-recorded “Different Drum” and that sounds amazing, there’s another indie ballad called “Baby Blue” written by a friend of Steve’s, there’s also a couple of songs on the record that I did with my son, some really fine afro-beat tracks that are going to blow your mind!

Paul Weller gave me two songs for the album, Steve has also written some great material “Still Trying” and “Magic Hour”, I also re-recorded a song called “Though It Hurts Me Badly” which is the first song that I ever wrote which was to do with my first inter-racial relationship which is pretty deep! The new record will be out this Autumn, we’re going to be announcing everything really soon!

It sounds like you’ve been having a great time working with some incredible writers and performers?

It’s amazing how Paul Weller has gotten behind the project and supported it as much as he has, we recorded most of the material in Devon at Steve’s home studio in Devon which is amazing, the scenery was incredible, the organic food was off the scale and the views from his home were incredible, it was such a beautiful place to work!

You’re set to play Cornbury Festival this year in Oxfordshire, what can the fans expect from your show?

I’ll be doing my classic hits, I’ll be doing a tribute to Tina Turner including “River Deep Mountain High”, the classic “First Cut is the Deepest” will definitely be in the set and then I’ll be doing some material from “The Turning Tide” album, “Medicated Goo” & “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”, there’s also a really good rock track that I wrote with Barry Gibb called “Born”. I have to be careful as my stage time is limited, I guess as long as I get the classics out there, everyone will be happy!

I think with UK festivals, you really need to curate a crowd pleasing set as you can’t really rely on the weather and the last thing people want to be doing is sat in a muddy field, listening to music that they’re NOT familiar with whilst the rain comes down!

Oh don’t you worry about that, the people of Cornbury Festival will have a great time during my set! This will be the first Summer of me doing UK festivals in my own right, I did a few in the past with Doctor Robert and I was on tour with Roger Waters and that covered a few festivals including Glastonbury which was incredible, such an experience. This year, I’m doing Cornbury and the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Love Supreme and also Looe Festival in Cornwall. I’m really looking forward to all of them, especially Cornbury because Mavis Staples is also performing!

And Jimmy Cliff!

Oh my word, I haven’t seen Jimmy Cliff for years, he’s definitely going on my list to see! I did an album with Jimmy, it must have been between 68’ and 72’, it was me, Jimmy and Doris Troy and we were crammed into this little hot ass studio in the Round House in London and it was so hot! I can just see us in there sweating and singing up a storm! , Jimmy is a lovely man!

All my life I’ve loved Mavis Staples, since I was a little girl, I bowed down to her, I once channelled her when I recorded “Respect Yourself” with The Kane Gang which was a cover of The Staples Singers classic! I really hope I get to meet her, I hope that we’re both performing on the same day! (I checked, PP and Mavis are on the Saturday!) We’re also both playing the Love Supreme Festival so if I don’t get to meet her at Cornbury, I’ll do my best to meet her there! Her, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner and Dionne Warwick, they’re the queens of the music scene!

So apart form the new album and preparing for the festival season, what else have you been doing?

I've been busy working on my new website, you MUST check it out....

I’ll be sure to do that, what’s the address?

It’s www.pparnold.com, nice and easy, It has everything under one roof, the site, the store, bios, news, press pieces, discography, videos, it’s well worth a look!

I'll be sure to do just that and get everyone reading this interview to do the same!

Pat, it's been a pleasure talking to you and learning about your very colourful past, I’m going to be at Cornbury on the Saturday so I’ll arrange to pop by and take you for a coffee…

That would be amazing, let’s do it!

All we need is some good weather, bring us some of that Spanish sunshine!

I’ll certainly pack it in my suitcase!

All the best for the new project and the Summer of festivals!

Thank you so much, it’s certainly going to be a Summer to remember!

BY ANYBODY’S STANDARDS PP ARNOLD HAS LED AN EXTRAORDINARY LIFE. A ‘GOOD GIRL’ PLUCKED FROM AN ABUSIVE TEEN MARRIAGE BY IKE AND TINA TURNER, AND DEPOSITED RIGHT IN THE HEART OF MID-1960s SOUL MUSIC, PP FLOURISHED AND WENT ON TO WORK WITH MANY OF THE GREATS.
In this new interview with The Mouth Magazine, the woman born Patricia Ann Cole in Los Angeles during 1946 looks back at a few choice moments from her career, and discusses the tools she’s used to cope with her extraordinary personal life…

IT’S A THRILL TO TALK WITH YOU, PP – NOT LEAST BECAUSE YOUR 1967 RECORDING OF THE FIRST CUT IS THE DEEPEST IS A REAL FAVOURITE OF MINE. IT’S A GREAT SONG ANYWAY, BUT YOUR VERSION OF IT IS DEFINITIVE… LEGEND HAS IT THAT YOU BOUGHT THE SONG FROM CAT STEVENS FOR THIRTY QUID… THAT’S MONEY PRETTY WELL SPENT!
Well, Cat Stevens was a writer at that time. He was one of the artists who used to hang out at Immediate, the record label. Immediate really was a useful hub for all the young writers, singers and musicians who were trying to make it in the industry at that time. So everybody knew everybody else and it could be a sort of melting pot. But I don’t know too much about that particular rumour, ha ha…

DO YOU REMEMBER MUCH AROUND RECORDING THE SONG?
Yeah, I do, I do… Mike Hurst brought the song to the table. He brought it to the attention of myself and Andrew Loog-Oldham. I loved it, so we booked Olympic Studios in Barnes for one evening and Mike Hurst produced it. A big orchestra… In those days you recorded everything, all the live strings and so on, all together. I remember standing in the booth and singing along with this beautiful orchestra playing. I used to always sing along when the track was being recorded – to be a part of the creation of the moment, really. It was a really beautiful evening, a beautiful night, and we got a beautiful track cut by the end of it.

WHAT IN PARTICULAR DID YOU LIKE ABOUT THE SONG?
I liked it straight away ‘cos I could really relate to it – I always like to be able to relate to a lyric. I understood it straight away because I had been a victim of… I hate to say ‘victim’, really… but I guess I was, ‘cos I was very young… I had been a victim of a very abusive teen marriage… and so I could relate to that ‘first cut’. That first time you get hurt. That first pain when you’re young.

I DON’T DOUBT THAT THE FIRST CUT IS THE DEEPEST IS THE SONG WHICH HAS FOLLOWED YOU AROUND THE MOST FOR THE LAST FIFTY YEARS… AND SO I WONDERED WHAT YOUR RELATIONSHIP IS WITH IT?
Yeah, it has followed me around. I love that song. Every time I sing that song I love it even more. I never ever ever get bored with singing that song. I never sing it exactly the same way, every time I sing it. It’s all about the moment, the emotion of the moment. That’s what we soul singers do, right? THE FIRST CUT IS THE DEEPEST is such a beautiful song – such a beautiful melody and such a beautiful lyric. Even when I go inside the song and I have to relive it, it’s kind of like a pain that’s now turned to joy. I managed to free myself from that pain, and that’s when destiny opened up her door and I was suddenly in the music industry… That song turned my life around. I was able to take a really negative experience in my life and make something very beautiful and positive out of it. I survived, y’know?

YOU MENTION BEING A TEENAGER, AND I’VE ALWAYS THOUGHT ONE OF THE GREAT THINGS ABOUT SOUL MUSIC FROM THE MID-’60s IS THAT THERE’S THIS REAL TEENAGE ‘INNOCENCE’ ABOUT IT… SOMETIMES IT JUST ABOUT VERGES ON AWARENESS, BUT THERE’S A REAL EARNESTNESS AND TEENAGE ENERGY TO IT… DOES THAT MAKE SENSE?
Yeah, it does… It does make sense. I was a teenager during the creation of Motown. All those groups. At school, high school (and even at junior high school at the beginning of Motown) we used to have these dances – dances on Wednesday afternoon after lunch, called Teen Canteen… Everybody would go to the auditorium and dance to Motown and have a really cool time. We were cool, we were all cool. Actually, when I came to England and there was the Mod thing, the way the Mods dressed, that was the way we dressed. We were Mod, I guess, but we called it Ivy League.

SO ARE THOSE SCHOOL DANCES WHERE THE MUSIC REALLY STARTED FOR YOU?
Well, actually I was born into a family of gospel singers. I had one sister and four brothers, so there were six of us, and we all sang. We’d go to church on Sunday and during the break, between Sunday school and 11 o’clock service, we’d be at the hamburger stand playing Motown on the jukebox and all singing… So I grew up singing with my sister and brothers – so when I came to England the Small Faces reminded me of my brothers, y’know? We were all about the same age… and the same height, ha ha… We were like the babies on the scene, really. The young kids on the block. The Rolling Stones and all the other groups, they were about four or five years older.

SO, BACK BEFORE THE MUSIC HAPPENED, YOU WERE LIVING IN LOS ANGELES, MARRIED WITH CHILDREN…
Yeah, I was. I became pregnant at the age of 15 and I missed out on having a normal teenage experience. I had two kids by the time I was seventeen years old. My son Kevin and my daughter Debbie… Kevin coaches soccer now, but sadly I lost Debbie. She died in a traffic accident… Losing Debbie was really devastating. My babies. Me and my babies. I was working two jobs and looking after two children and dealing with my husband… I actually said a prayer, asking God to show me a way out the hell that I was in – but I’d never in my wildest dreams thought about singing professionally or anything… and suddenly he stepped in and gave me this career as a singer. I was able to change my life and make a better life for my kids.

AGAIN THE LEGEND SUGGEST THIS, BUT YOUR CAREER BEGAN ALMOST BY ACCIDENT… SOME OF YOUR FRIENDS WERE AUDITIONING TO BE IKETTES – BACK-UP SINGERS IN THE IKE AND TINA TURNER REVUE… ONE OF THEM BACKED OUT AND ASKED YOU TO GO ALONG TO MAKE UP THE NUMBERS…
Well that’s true, y’know? I can see that morning, even now. I can see myself in the laundromat room of my apartment building, washing clothes and cleaning and getting ready for the week ahead. Saying my prayer and then coming inside and doing all my chores and the ‘phone ringing. My friends Maxine Smith and Gloria Scott begging me. They called me out of desperation, really. The other girl hadn’t shown up. Maxine was, like, an ex-girlfriend of my brother Ronnie. Actually, the other girl, the one who didn’t show up, was also an ex-girlfriend of my brother Ronnie, ha ha ha…

… HA HA… HE WAS A POPULAR GUY!
Yeah, he was! He really was! He’s no longer with us either, sadly. But, yeah, he was popular. He was a real cutie-pie… But, yeah, Maxine and Gloria said “You gotta come” and I was, like, “No, I can’t go. My husband’s not gonna let me go”… They said “Tell him anything – we’re coming” and they hung up the ‘phone… A half hour later they were knockin’ on my door! So I told my husband a lie, ha ha, and next thing I know I’m in Ike and Tina Turner’s living room singing DANCING IN THE STREET, ha ha ha…

YOU PARTICULARLY HIT IT OFF WITH TINA…
Straight away. We sang DANCING IN THE STREET and another song, which I can never remember. I didn’t know the other song, so I just had to follow the harmony. That was okay – I grew up singing so my ear is how I do it. So, anyway, we finish singing, and right afterwards Tina goes “Girls, you got the gig”… I go “Oh no, not me..! I gotta go home. I’ve lied to my husband and I’m gonna be in big trouble”. Tina just planted a seed and said “Well, if you’re gonna get in trouble for nothing you might as well go with us up to Fresno and see the show”…

… AND YOU DID…
… And I did! I joined, but I only had less than a week to learn their whole show! But that audition day was just ‘one of those days’, y’know? Sometimes you have days that just take on a life of their own. This day did that. I mean, I was really a good girl, y’know? Well, okay, I had let myself get talked into ditching one class – my music appreciation class, at that, ha ha! As a young teenage girl with hormones jumping all over the place I ditched my class and thought that I could handle a sort of ‘heavy petting’ session but I got jumped on. A cute guy and we just go crazy. He was older than me, as well, so in a way when I look back on it it’s kinda like I was sort of ‘groomed’… I kept saying “No, no, no, no” for a long long long time but… y’know… Anyway… Anyway… That was so long ago. When you ask me these questions I’m right back there and can remember it. It’s clear.

IKE AND TINA TURNER CAME OVER TO THE UK IN 1966 AND SUPPORTED THE ROLLING STONES. THAT WAS A MASSIVE TURNING POINT IN YOUR LIFE…
Big time! Big time!

YOU LEFT THE IKE AND TINA ROADSHOW AND STAYED IN THE UK. SORT OF RATTLING THROUGH YOUR CAREER HERE AT GREAT SPEED, YOU WORKED WITH THE SMALL FACES, AND YOU WENT ON TO WORK WITH MANY OTHERS OVER THE YEARS – INCLUDING NICK DRAKE, PAUL WELLER, ERIC CLAPTON, PRIMAL SCREAM, OCEAN COLOUR SCENE, THE BEATMASTERS… I WANT TO ASK YOU ABOUT A COUPLE OF ARTISTS I’M NOT SURE I’VE HEARD YOU SPEAK TOO MUCH ABOUT… YOU SANG BACK-UP ON PETER GABRIEL’S 1986 SINGLE SLEDGEHAMMER…
Yeaaaaah! I’ve been blessed to be asked by so many great artists to work with them, and SLEDGEHAMMER was a great record. And another great time. I’d left the UK after losing Debbie, a few years before, then but I’d just come back and I’d done some things including the show STARLIGHT EXPRESS. After that show I was getting ready to record an album and I met a guy who hooked me up with Peter Gabriel. He had these anti-gravity boots at his house, and I was always really into all of that sort of thing – so Peter and I really hit it off. I was in an accident in the mid-‘80s, I was crushed between two cars. So I got into alternative healing and also fitness, sports. Because I’d had my kids when I was really really young, I’d never developed my own sporting abilities. My brother introduced me to Shotokan (karate) to help me with my grieving. I didn’t really do it for that long, but when I started doing my training I realised I had quite an ability for long distance running. I was running for my life, basically. From there I got into a lot of sports things. I moved to Miami for a while and while I was there I found out about anti-gravity boots, so I bought a pair. The boots have, like, a sort of clip on them so you can attach them to something. I had this tree in my garden and what I’d do is I’d just hang upside down from it in the boots, doing sit-ups and everything upside down. The anti-gravity thing, being upside down, it helps the blood to flow. From your feet to your head… all of that, ha ha.

PETER HAS LONG BEEN INTO THAT SORT OF STUFF…
Yeah. At his house in Bath, he had some anti-gravity boots too. So we had this weird exercise thing in common and it helped us connect. It was a really lovely evening of… hanging upside down in the boots and then going into Peter’s studio to sing and then having a really lovely dinner together, ha ha. Yeah, that was cool.

YOU WEREN’T UPSIDE DOWN WHEN YOU WERE SINGING THOUGH, WERE YOU!?
Ha ha, no I wasn’t upside down when I was singing. That was a long-winded story though, wasn’t it? That’s the thing; when I remember and go into these spaces in my life there’s always some story!

PETER HAS ALWAYS BEEN A MASSIVE OTIS REDDING FAN, AS I UNDERSTAND IT – AND YOU CAN REALLY HEAR THAT IN SLEDGEHAMMER I THINK..
Yeah. He really loved soul music. Y’know, I didn’t know anything about Genesis? I’d been out of the UK – I’d gone to Los Angeles to do a record and I lost my daughter and so I didn’t go back to England. I was away from 1975 until 1983, so I think I missed that whole Genesis period and everything. I only really knew about Peter when I went to do the SO album. He was just a great guy, to be honest.

YOU ALSO WORKED WITH THE KLF… AND AS GREAT AS THOSE RECORDS ARE, THE BUSINESS SIDE TURNED OUT NOT TO BE A HAPPY EXPERIENCE…
The business, yeah. Ha ha… The bus-iness… Everywhere I go people say “Woah, you’re the voice of 3AM ETERNAL” – but Bill and Jimmy have been trying to say that the hook of the song, which I sang, wasn’t even the hook. It’s ridiculous, really, ‘cos everybody knows that’s the hook. It’s a really great record – and everywhere I go everybody wants to talk about it. So I realise that the record was a massive major hit all over the world – and the percentage I asked them for was only small. Plus, I am the MuMu choir… I am the MuMu choir… Katie Kissoon (who I also worked with for Roger Waters), I took her down to the KLF’s studio in Dagenham in their police car, and we tracked those “MuMu” bits over and over again. They used those vocals on so much of their music. My deal with them was “Hey man, if you use a solo bit just look after me”.

I THINK YOUR SHARE PROBABLY WENT UP IN FLAMES…
I was really annoyed about that. I guess it did go up in flames. But did it really? Did it really go up in flames? I showed up at Jimmy’s place shortly after it ‘went up in flames’ and surprised him. Like, really surprised him, ha ha. I showed up with my son, to try and get some justice. And now I understand that the KLF are having something of a resurgence – and it’d be really lovely if they’d pop up one day and do the right thing… But, anyway… We wanna stay on the positive, don’t we?

WE DO… ONE OF THE THINGS THAT’S ALWAYS STRUCK ME ABOUT YOU, BUT PARTICULARLY AS WE’VE BEEN TALKING, IS JUST HOW MUCH CONTENT THERE HAS BEEN IN YOUR LIFE – SO MUCH EXPERIENCE… THE MUSIC AND EVERYTHING ASSOCIATED, OF COURSE… BUT THE DIFFICULT TEEN MARRIAGE… THREE CHILDREN, ONE LOST… YOU WERE INVOLVED IN QUITE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT YOURSELF… USING THESE WORDS IN A COMPLETELY CELEBRATORY SENSE, YOU’RE A TRUE SURVIVOR…
Thank you. I like to live in the now, I like to stay focused in the now. I got so many exciting things happening right now. But when I think about all the things I’ve survived through my life I do give thanks… Really, I do. God had blessed me so much. Life can throw difficult things at you all the time – and there have been times that I didn’t know how to deal with those kind of things. I suffered a lot, y’know? It made me suffer. But now, most of all, I look at my Grandson and I think he’s the true soul survivor… His name is even Soul… He was born with his heart backwards – and so he has a lot of special needs as a result of that. Soul came in here fighting and he’s still fighting. He is just gorgeous, he’s so fabulous.

WHAT’S THE SECRET, PP? WHAT QUALITY IS IT THAT’S MADE YOU SURVIVE? BECAUSE, TALKING TO YOU NOW, YOU’RE NOT AT ALL CYNICAL OR HARD OR CLOSED OFF…
I personally believe that we’re all spiritual beings in physical bodies, and when we can no longer live in these physical bodies the spirit moves on. I believe there’s only life – and I try to stay connected with that. I stay connected with all the family I’ve lost and all the friends I’ve lost. Everyone who didn’t make it. My meditation this morning was all about how we’re connected with our true selves. We have our ego selves and our true selves. The ego self is how most people function in the physical world we live in. But the true self is always perfect, so that’s one of my positive things that I come back to throughout each day. Stay positive and stay connected to your true self, your inner self. Work from that. Work from the inside out – instead of letting the outside beat you down…

PP’s tour down under follows the release last year of “The Turning Tide”, an album of unreleased recordings from the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, produced by both Barry Gibb and Eric Clapton. It cracked the UK Top 30 upon release, recently made the NZ iTunes Top 20, and has been the subject of many accolades and much airplay since its release.

Although this will be PP’s be first concert tour of these parts, she has previously performed here as a featured singer with Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters in 2002 and 2008. In recent times she has also recorded with Primal Scream, Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene and Paul Weller. She has a voice that other artists love to work with; her first duet was with Rod Stewart on a single produced by Mick Jagger, way back in ’67.

Her timeless work has earned PP an ardent following amongst fans of ‘60s British rock and pop in addition to lovers of classic soul, and some of her early dance numbers are considered Northern Soul classics. Her status as an icon of her era when she starred alongside old friend Marianne Faithful in the final episode of the original series of “Absolutely Fabulous” in 1996 (for which she and Marianne especially recorded a new version of the program’s theme song “This Wheel’s On Fire”).

With her memoir soon due for publication and a new album in the can, co-written and produced by the Ocean Colour Scene’s Steve Craddock and including a couple of duets with long-time supporter and fan Paul Weller, 2018 promises to be a big year for PP Arnold. Join PP and her dream Australian band for what will undoubtedly be amongst the most talked about tours of the year.

Making music is a very spiritual thing. So much creativity, thought and work goes into just preparing to go into the studio and attempt to make that hit record that everyone will love.

I was at a crossroads back in 1968-1971. Immediate Records had folded and I searched for a new label that would give me the opportunity to continue make music that would take me to the next stage of my musical journey.

When I was introduced to Barry Gibb by Jim Morris (RIP) and he agreed to produce me and help me get a record deal. I was so happy and so excited about working with him as I was a big Bee Gees fan and had recorded “To Love Somebody” on my second album ‘Kafunta’.

Barry kept his word and helped me get a record deal with his manager Robert Stigwood’s ‘RSO’ record label. Robert also became my manager. A lot of time went into rehearsing and learning the songs and I was so happy when we were finally able to go into I.B.C. Studios and start recording.

The recording sessions were all very uplifting, exciting and enjoyable. The songs and all of the Bill Shepherd arrangements were so beautiful and I put my young Heart and Soul into every vocal and all the beautiful background vocal arrangements. Working with Barry, to do justice to all his beautiful songs stretched me vocally in a way I never imagined and I was so happy with the work that we were doing. We recorded around ten tracks and six of these Gibb compositions ‘Born To Be Free’, ‘Bury Me Down By The River’, ‘Give A Hand, Take A Hand’, ‘Happiness’, ‘The Turning Tide’, ‘High and Windy Mountain’ and two covers ‘Spinning Wheel’ and the beautiful ‘You Made Me So Very Happy’ will finally be released on this Heritage offering of mine, which I am calling, ‘The Turning Tide’

Eric Clapton was another RSO artist and after supporting Eric as the opening act on the ‘Eric Clapton Delaney, Bonnie and Friends tour’, Robert arranged for me to go in the Studio with Eric producing and the Delaney and Bonnie Band who later became Derek and The Dominos along with Rita Coolidge and help from my friend Doris Troy and we recorded three covers, which are also included on this album. ‘Medicated Goo’, ‘Brand New Day’ and ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’.

A further two tracks from my collaboration with the amazing, talented guitarist Caleb Quay were written and produced by Caleb and myself. Two of these songs, ‘If This Were My World’ and Children Of The Last War are also included on this album; ‘The Turning Tide’ that I am so pleased has finally seen the light of day.
PP Arnold - London’s First Lady of Soultag:pparnold.com,2005:Post/51055612018-02-14T19:51:34+00:002022-03-16T16:44:38+00:00Cornbury Music Festival – July 14th 2018

PP Arnold talks to Alexis Petridis

She fled an abusive husband to tour with Ike & Tina, was brought to swinging London by Mick Jagger, and ended up singing for the KLF. Now the soul great has dusted off a lost album produced by Eric Clapton and Barry Gibb

I meet PP Arnold in the top-floor restaurant of a hotel in London’s West End. The windows offer a panoramic view of central London, which turns out to be perfect for illustrating her conversation. You can see Regent’s Park, where Mick Jaggertook her for a walk after lunch in 1967 and convinced her to leave her job as a backing vocalist for Ike and Tina Turner and become a solo singer; she signed to Immediate, the record label founded by the Stones’ Svengali-like manager Andrew Loog Oldham...

Much like Jimi Hendrix, it was London where American soul singer PP Arnold came to make her name. Having left the Ike & Tina Turner Revue whilst on tour in the UK, Arnold went on to have a number of hits in the UK such as The First Cut is the Deepest and Angel of the Morning, as well as collaborating with the likes of Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger and the Small Faces. When her record label folded in 1969, her third album The Turning Tide was thrown into jeopardy. Despite being independently produced by first Barry Gibb then Eric Clapton, the album was shelved. After a long campaign, Arnold has managed to reclaim the recordings and the album has finally been released this October...

The American soul singer PP Arnold is probably best known for songs like 'The First Cut Is The Deepest' and before that she was one of the backing singers for Ike and Tina Turner. But perhaps she would have been an even bigger star had it not been for a 'lost' album that she recorded here in London 45 years ago. Well now, it's finally being released. Alice Bhandhukravi has the story.

SHE is one of the iconic singers of the 60s, whose voice resonated through the decades as a reminder of how great the decade was – and she is still belting them out.

PP Arnold came to the UK in the mid-60s as an Ikette (a member of the Ike and Tine Turner Revue), then went solo.

As a soloist, she recorded two of the most memorable songs with a female pop voice: The First Cut Is The Deepest (on which The Nice provided musical backing) and Angel Of the Morning. Not long after that her record label – Immediate – folded and since then she has been totally independent.

About to start a short tour to promote her latest CD – more about which later – Arnold tells me how she came to the UK in the first place.

“It was quite by chance, really. I was at my home and I said a prayer to God to save me from an abusive teen marriage I was in. Within an hour I had a phone call from one of my friends.

“It transpired that the girls with Ike and Tina Turner’s Revue show were leaving and Maxine (my friend) and Gloria were going to be Ikettes but a third girl had let them down at the last minute.

WHEN Immediate Records imploded spectacularly in 1970, PP Arnold was without a label and entered what she calls her “lost years”. It shouldn’t have been the case. She was after all The First Lady of Immediate, as the album title appointed her.

There had been several huge hits from that and the Kafunta album, and at 24 she was an intrinsic part of the British music scene.

The next step would be the one to elevate her even further. Barry Gibb was on something of a battling brother-fuelled hiatus from the Bee Gees and, in a forerunner to what he would do later in his career with the likes of Dionne Warwick and Barbra Streisand, he went about writing and producing an album of songs for the 24-year old PP Arnold...

MOJO 287 / October 2017

IN 2017, DAVE GROHL is a world-straddling rock titan with his band the Foo Fighters, touting a brand new album of his best songs yet; but 25 years ago, as he prepared to take the Reading Festival stage with an embattled Nirvana, his future was on a knife edge. ONLY in this month’s MOJO magazine, he relives the moments and celebrates the influences that made the songwriter and star of today, while a 15-track FREE CD showcases the American alternative rock revolution of 1989-92, with fierce tracks from Afghan Whigs, Pavement, Mudhoney and more. Also in the issue: David Gilmour goes back to Pompeii; Cat Stevens reclaims his past; while Sparks wave their freak flag high. Plus: Ian Dury & The Blockheads; Elvis – The Last Mystery; unseen Lou Reed by Mick Rock; LCD Soundsystem return… And: how Jimmy Webb struck MOR gold on PCP!

For a shining example of record industry idiocy, look no further than the curious case of PP Arnold. The soul singer looks back at a career that took her to the edge of madness

Now 70 years of age, PP Arnold has spent most of her life chasing her past. For more than four decades, the US soul singer reminds me, she has been knocking on doors, calling in favours and rifling industry vaults, always hunting for tapes of the aborted sessions that she recorded with Barry Gibb and Eric Clapton back in the early 70s.

“It was so frustrating,” she sighs. “That music has been sitting on shelves, in England, Germany, LA. You keep starting from scratch. You keep paying solicitors. I started thinking, ‘I’ll be an old lady soon. I want my music!’”

American soul singer P.P. Arnold’s “lost” album The Turning Tide, with songs produced in the late 1960s and early ’70s by Barry Gibb and Eric Clapton, will be released for the first time by independent Kundalini Music on Oct. 6. The unheard album showcases the authentic R&B credentials of the vastly experienced Los Angeles-born vocalist, who went on to work with everyone from Nick Drake to Peter Gabriel…

Several huge hits followed, ‘First Cut is The Deepest’, ‘Angel Of The Morning’, ‘If You Think You’re Groovy’ and so on… PP became one of the iconic faces of the 60’s.

This year celebrates her 50-year anniversary as an incredible performing artist in the music industry and boy is she still going strong!!! To coincide with this wonderful heritage album, ‘The Turning Tide’, St James Publishing House is releasing her autobiography ‘The First Cut Is The Deepest’ around the October tour and a brand new solo album is on the horizon for next year, produced by Steve Cradock.

It was around 1968 when Immediate Records folded and PP found herself at a crossroad, looking for a new label that would give her the opportunity to continue to put out music and take her to the next phase of her musical journey.

The late Jim Morris and personal assistant to Robert Stigwood, can be credited as the catalyst which encouraged Barry Gibb to work with PP. After introducing PP to Gibb, who was already a fan of her music, it didn’t take much encouragement for Barry to jump at the chance to produce a record with her. “ I was so excited about working with him as I was a big Bee Gees fan and had already recorded ‘To Love Somebody’ on my second album ‘Kafunta’” explains PP.

It was Barry who got PP a record deal with his manager Robert Stigwood (RSO Records) and consequently he also became her manager.

“A lot of time was spent rehearsing and learning the songs and I was so happy when we entered I.B.C. Studios to begin the recording process”, remarks PP.

The recording sessions bring back happy memories for PP, with Bill Shepherd (Bee Gees, Gene Vincent) creating the beautiful arrangements we hear on the record today. “We recorded around ten tracks, eight of which made it onto ‘The Turning Tide’ ”

The eight which feature on the album are, ‘Born’, ‘Bury Me Down By The River’, ‘Give A Hand, Take A Hand’, ‘Happiness’, ‘The Turning Tide’, ‘High And Windy Mountain’, a brilliant cover of ‘Spinning Wheel’ and the beautiful, ‘You’ve Made Me So Very Happy’.

Sadly due to Bee Gee’s commitments only half the record was able to be completed, and PP was heartbroken, as she had put her heart and soul into the recordings. At a lot loss on how to go forward it was the idea of her manager Robert to pair PP up with Eric Clapton.

“Robert arranged for me to be the opening act on the ‘Eric Clapton, Delaney, Bonnie and Friends tour, and I put together a fantastic rhythm section, which included Steve Howe (Yes) on guitar, Ashton, Garner and Dyke with Leslie Duncan and Kaye Garner (Elton John, Tony Bennett, Burt Bacharach) and off we set” , explains PP.

Clapton was so impressed with PP’s live performance he didn’t need asking twice when Robert approached him to go into the studio with PP to finish off the record. Eric called in his Delaney and Bonnie band who later became Derek and The Dominos, along with Rita Coolidge and PP’s dear friend soul singer Doris Troy. The end result was phenomenal, they recorded songs written by Steve Winwood, Van Morrison and Jagger, Richards.

“We recorded three covers, which are on this album ‘Medicated Goo’, ‘Brand New Day’ and ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’ ”

A further two tracks, ‘If This Were My World’ and ‘Children Of The Last War’, were added to this collection with the talented guitarist Caleb Quaye (Mick Jagger, Hall & Oates, Pete Townsend, Elton John).

These recordings were left sitting on shelves for many years due to industry politics, and still after all these years, PP could never fathom the thought that nobody would be able to hear them. It became her mission to let these recordings see the light of day, and not let this incredible piece of music history stay buried.

With the help of PP’s current manager, Sally Cradock and music industry veteran Bill Levenson, whose past history includes putting together compilations for Bob Marley, Donna Summer and Jerry Lee Lewis, they began to recover these lost gems and fight for the right to release them, from various publishers who were not keen to part with them.

Steve Cradock (Ocean Colour Scene) began mixing the tracks, calling upon his old friend Paul Weller, who gladly allowed them to use his Black Barn Studio, and also his long time engineer, Charles Rees. The results were remarkable; after all these years, pieces of history were brought back to life again.

“These recordings document my growth and development after the ‘Immediate’ years and my struggle to survive being a relevant solo artist during a lot of lost years in my career. It’s an amazing trip down memory lane that I am so thrilled can be experienced in the here and now”.
